Update: From Luol's Twitter: "Words can't describe how happy I am to make my first all star. Thanks to all my supporters especially the coaches who voted for me. #Honored"
Bulls small forward Luol Deng will join teammate Derrick Rose in Orlando for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game after being named as an Eastern Conference All-Star reserve.
The announcement was made Thursday night on TNT.
In 21 games this season, Deng has posted averages of 16.0 points, a career-high 7.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals in a team-high 38.0 minutes per game.
When a left wrist injury recently sidelined him for seven games, it showed, as the Bulls went 4-3. With Deng in the lineup, Chicago is 18-3 on the season.
Deng earning All-Star status marks the first time two Bulls landed on the team since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen did so in 1997.
Deng was unavailable for comment Thursday night, but will meet the media at the Bulls’ shootaround in Charlotte on Friday morning.
This is awesome news, very cool for Luol to get this recognition. Is it based on his team's success? I suppose, the Bulls have been amongst the league's best teams all season, so it stood to reason that they'd get a second All-Star selection. But whatever Deng's shortcomings may be statistically, it's not 'intangibles' that puts him over the top as much as it is his defense, and he's the star of that unit on the Bulls. Plus, he seems to be a better version of such attendees as others in the past (Mo Williams, for example).
He probably shouldn't play in the game given his injury. But, he's playing with pain regardless, is probably really psyched to go and have his career validated a bit, and playing against New Orleans and Charlotte this week is just as much of an 'exhibition' as this will be. It's sentimental and short-sighted...but I hope he plays. The big question is can Thibodeau get him to 40 minutes coming off the bench?

It bears mentioning again
that the only player the guys from Inside the NBA did NOT say ‘well deserved’ to was Luol. None of them, besides for EJ, had him in their projected reserve list. Charles and Kenny had 2 Pacers, Shaq had Josh freaking Smith, and Webber was completely off the reservation with Ray Allen, Jrue Holiday and Josh Smith. So the best team by record in the NBA only deserves 1 All Star for the second year in a row? Are the Pacers more deserving?
Hopefully this gives the Bulls some added fire.
holla8283 - February 9, 2012
Yeah I like Kenny Smith but not sure what
he’s smoking with that Boozer crap. He knows better. Also I agree with Barkely about what he’s saying about Pierce getting in only because he’s played well for a couple of weeks. If you’re going to out Pierce on the All-Star team then Noah should be on the team as well for how he’s played the last 2-3 weeks
Dils - February 9, 2012
yay I can make this joke again
lol, they need more fire

i think its just to add to that stereotype
that the bulls are just a one man show, and that derrick rose shoots a million shots and doesnt pass teh ball because he has no one to pass the ball to….
piccolomair - February 9, 2012
its ridiculous really, i mean, i think its jsut the NBA and all these so called analysts think we dont have a true second superstar; therefore, its rose or nothing...
also, we just dont have that second BRAND NAME player that ESPN can showcase or the NBA can advertise. So, it creates the perception that every player on the bulls are incapable of being any help when it comes to a close game.

Lu = most underrated player in the league
RM. - February 9, 2012 via mobile
his attributes aint even close to right in
Nba2k lol..
RM. - February 9, 2012 via mobile
i think its what makes it awesome
cuz dudes money in like everything (although his defense should be way better imo) but his overall always comes off like hes just a role player…suckers
piccolomair - February 9, 2012
yea i completely agree
his perimeter defense and defense awareness should both be like 20 points higher but it is what it is….
RM. - February 9, 2012
How do those stats affect gameplay?
I mean…he doesn’t get a ton of steals or blocks…really his defense is mostly due to his decision making and positioning. Is that something the game can actually take into account? Or does it just take a perimeter D value and give it a % chance of steals, interior D to chance blocks, etc?
SidM - February 9, 2012
well i wouldnt want his blocking ability
or stealing ability up. But his defensive awareness, it basically dictates how well the a.i. controls him on helpside defense, but it also increases the chances that player pokes a bad pass. On ball defense is the one i think they should raise because that basically increases that ‘collision’ factor that comes between the ball handler and the defender. It also increases the strength of holding the the left trigger (on xbox) and hand up effectiveness so if you are near a shooter and holding down lt, it affects the chances of that shot going in.
piccolomair - February 9, 2012
Luol is the defensive equivalent of a shutdown corner
he doesn’t get nearly as many steals and blocks by virtue of guarding his opponents well enough that they don’t get shots off, and send the ball to someone else.
NerdVernacular - February 10, 2012
I agree
What I wasn’t sure of, is how that sort of ability translated to this game. I haven’t played a BBall videogame extensively since Double Dribble on the NES :/

wasnt that trade pretty much the big reason you became such a hard ass in terms of roster construction and years later yousuggested it was a no brainer in roses sophmore year to trade him for cp3 and why you were/are wanting to get lebron on this team, douchiness and all

Juiceboxjerry - February 9, 2012
aww. Why do I like Luol's humbleness more than Rose's?
your friendly BullsBlogger - February 9, 2012
Derrick's humbleness is on autopilot
After every question he just responds with one of about ten humble answers that he has in his memory bank
Juiceboxjerry - February 9, 2012
The source of his humbleness, I think.
Derrick’s is from his momma, Luol’s is from the tragic history of his country.
Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. - February 9, 2012
it is why i would hate to see a rose and deng combo broken up in case of a howard trade
not to say i dont want howard, but at the same time, it just wouldn’t be the same not seeing
Luol in the lineup. He is def one of my fav bulls of all time.
Geo4MVP - February 9, 2012
Add in the social consciousness with that tragic history...
And people see more of a noble activist than “just an athlete”. His play doesn’t suffer from his off-court endeavorsand if they did, no one would have the chutzpah to criticize him for it.
Alex Sonty - February 10, 2012
I feel like Luol had to work harder than players of equivalent talent to earn this all-star bid. He is not the most athletic player, he is not a streaky shooter, he has little flash, Deng simply plays hard and plays smart. Further, I think he is genuinely thankful for and proud of being an all-star.
chowder - February 9, 2012
the lack of flashness always made his career more difficult

Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. - February 9, 2012

upon looking at the list it really seems like it worked out pretty fairly
3 heat, 2 bulls, 1 magic, 1 hawk, 1 pacer, 1 celtic, 1 philly. then of course 1 knick and 1 net… lol. but one was a fan vote and one was a guy who still is very good despite playing on a shitty team. a lot of guys had a case but i like this list, even if it’s not what i necessarily would have predicted.
nice to see rondo get the shaft. celtics didn’t deserve more than one guy and pierce is the one who brought them out of the hole.
Jaina - February 9, 2012
I know they harped on it pregame, but I agree that Josh Smith was very deserving
His play has been the main reason they’ve been so good this year. Although if he made it, that probably means no Deng
Juiceboxjerry - February 9, 2012
well, i could see it being josh instead of joe
tough to say if it would take deng out of the running, guess it depends how iguodala stacked up – since the 2 backup guards would then be him and williams.
hard to believe sometimes smith has never made it… it’s an intense field though. i was just thinking of it team wise. like i’m glad there was no amare, no rondo, etc etc, despite past years.
Jaina - February 9, 2012
Yea
A few weeks ago, I was going to put together a fan post proposing a trade of Boozer for Josh Smith, but Smith’s play this year moved that trade from the maybe category into the ‘not practical’ category.

But not by Luol and Iggy so much as JoJohns.
Alex Sonty - February 10, 2012

maybe its because ive only seen jennings when hes faced off against rose…but hes looked pretty meh if you ask me…actually, irving is the real snub, hes putting up numbers just as good…no…better….than jennings…and hes carrying a team that literally without him was like the worst in the league
piccolomair - February 9, 2012
Problem with Irving is he averages less than 30 mpg
Also, Jennings’s defense is really good, despite what Rose did to him.
Poloplaya14 - February 9, 2012

If the Celtics win this game, and take care of business against the Raptors tomorrow
they’d be heading into their game against us on a seven game winning streak, while we’d be on a five game win streak. That would definitely make things a bit more interesting. They actually look pretty good lately
Juiceboxjerry - February 9, 2012
They will slow the game down to snails pace.
Rose might not be healthy enough to do the necessary damage, and he might not even play, but if he is feeling much better and can play freely, that will cause all sorts of problems for the C’s, especially if other guys can hit their shots (Korver, Watson, Deng…Boozer).
BullsFan22 - February 9, 2012
The Bulls play at a slow pace anyway
so slowing it down further doesn’t give Boston any advantage.
If the Bulls lose it’s simply because they had an off night. I don’t even think CJ replacing Rose would put them at a disadvantage. Position to position, the Bulls are one of the worst matchups in the league for the Celtics.
Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. - February 9, 2012
True, the Bulls play fairly slow tempo game, but they are more than capable of playing speed up.
The Celtics can’t really hurt us unless we get into foul trouble or we start laying up bricks (see Boozer).
BullsFan22 - February 9, 2012
at first i was watching the game and thinking
man the lakers and celtics defense is atrocious…then i realized i was comparing it to the bulls defense. I mean, god damn are we a a great defensive team. Alot of the buckets both the lakers and celtics are getting, they wouldnt happen against the bulls.
piccolomair - February 9, 2012
if rose isn't feeling better he should really sit out the game tomorrow
it’s the fucking bobcats.
i’m going to the game on sun. i hope he’s good to go. and i hope the bulls win. haven’t been too lucky recently in the games i’ve been to here at the garden.

CJ for 3pt? Reserve? Anybody else? Probably not, eh?
BullsFan22 - February 9, 2012

Does Luol remind anyone anyone else of Charles Tillman
A good solid player who does a lot of things right, but doesn’t get the gaudy stats, and was always just a little bit worse than the top 2-3 guys at his position so never got a pro bowl/all star, then he finally breaks through?
tuluse - February 9, 2012

OznCoop - February 9, 2012
Also,
a player that even though they aren’t MVP caliber, the team wholeheartedly relies on in tough games…
kidronmusic - February 10, 2012
Pretty much. That's a perfect comparison.
Locust_Inferno_666 - February 10, 2012
Define "gaudy"?
Tillman isn’t a “shutdown corner” with 4-5 INTs a year, but the Cover 2 system doesn’t have him as a “cover corner”. His job is to defend the flats — from hashmark to sideline no deeper than 5-10 yards past scrimmage, basically a safety on the outside. Since 2003, only Ronde Barber is listed as having more tackles among CB and Barber’s been a safety forever and no one has forced more fumbles. Safeties and LBs are more in place to get INTs in a Cover 2, so those aren’t “gaudy”. The forced fumbles are 50% more than the next corner, so that could be pretty “gaudy”,
Yeah, the recognition isn’t there, but Tillman’s pretty uncontroversially one of the best Cover 2 CBs in the short history of that type of zone.
Cover 2 did have the exotic element last decade as Thibs’ strong side-help scheme does now, so in that there’s a good comparison — as conventional wisdom hasn’t adapted the statistical analysis for what makes that defensive system effective. It’s more the reason why Kevin Garnett wasn’t regarded as much to closer to Dwight Howard as the best defensive player in the game since joining the Cs. A good comparison is that Tillman and Deng play peripheral roles in their defenses that greatly shorten the available space for opposing offenses; that where they’re most valuable isn’t in forcing turnovers and disrputing ball play, but in preventing their space on the floor as options for opposing offenses to use.
Alex Sonty - February 10, 2012
Tillman's ability to punch the football out is elite.
Nobody is his rival for that skill. Boxing career after football?
Mike Mueller - February 10, 2012
The Bears run actual cover 2 less than 1/3 of the time
The past few years they’ve actually been going to cover 3 most of the time as the safeties have sucked.
I never called Tillman a shutdown corner, where did you get that from? I said he was solid.
As for guady stats, I mean stats that people expect to see from a certain player. Tillman doesn’t get a lot of interceptions, the casual fan who votes for probowls doesn’t care about his tackles or forced fumbles. It’s funny you mention Barber as he did have one year with 10 picks that probably “put him on the map” in terms of recognition.
tuluse - February 10, 2012

Lets be honest here
lu was not a good player during the vinny era, about average at best
we that bitched about him know his limitations
Rose’s will saved Lu in the eyes of Bulls fans, open shot after open shot,
Thank god he now has a three pt shot.
Congrats Lu, and deserved.
Trey23 - February 9, 2012
Lu was always talented
But he disappeared in the 4th after being aggressive and showing his skills in qtrs 1-3, after 4 or 5 yrs of that and with his “young” tag dipping I was an advocate for trading him but mostly in a combo for a bigger post star.
Luol is still a lot like Mario from super Mario 2, good at everything but great at nothing and always one of those if things go right all star fringe player.
I am happy to see him be the first and now we know only of the hinrich deng Gordon trio to make it.
Well deserved, now let’s do my lakers and c’s trade using him and Watson to nab gasol and boozer and asik plus charlotte option for Allen and Dooling….
I remember when Thibs was hired he said that Lu was the most under
majoyenrac - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Whoops didn't finish thought there
I remember when thibs was hired he said Lu was perhaps the most underrated player in the league and he was going to show him and the league how good he was, well he has.
majoyenrac - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Disagree
He’s basically the same player, just takes more 3s now, and the team is better.
Course, I always thought he was good.
tuluse - February 9, 2012
Not a good player is not the same thing as average. And he was always above average.
And he’s almost the same player with the same repertoire. Vinny was a worthless coach who encouraged long jumpers, Thibs told him to move one foot back. Aside from that he’s got the same off-ball game, same slashing moves, same defense. He’s just paired with good defenders again like those Skiles teams.
Ozzie Montana - February 9, 2012
Those were frustrating years for fans for sure
Thats where the bitching came from
Inconsistant team and we wanted more consistancy from Lu, not just game to game, but half to half. He would get 12 in the half and 4 in the second half.
Trey23 - February 9, 2012
Deng's best year was 2006-07.
He was only 21 and seemed like a potential superstar. Expectations went through the roof. The Bulls reportedly refused to include him in a trade for Kevin Garnett in 2007 and Pau Gasol in 2008. Deng’s production dropped off in 2007-08, but he nevertheless signed a huge contract. He then became an often-injured average player with a big contract, and a huge disappointment — until last year.

Sometimes he just wakes up one morning and says, "You know, I don’t feel like missing a shot today. So I won’t!"
Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. - February 9, 2012
It's funny
Nash is having as good of a season as he did when he won those joke MVPs, possibly better, but because he is surrounded by sooty garbage he is considered a fringe all-star.
Nash has been unreal this year, and has inexplicably become massively underrated. I never thought that would be possible.
Gentleman Jim - February 9, 2012
I don't think he's underrated
Its just that there’s so many ridiculously good point guards that it’s hard to spread all the love around. Rightfully, the guys that play on good teams get most of the attention. People LOVE Nash. Don’t think for a second that he’d be overlooked if Phoenix was playing really well right now, or if he was traded to a a better team.

Because he so desperately needs to disabuse Bulls fans of their conceptions
Seems to be a bit of a personal chore for him.
jpx7 - February 10, 2012
To be honest, he's kinda right
I mean, his numbers are not too good. The thing is, it’s his defense and rebounding that have been essential to the team. I just think it’s a situation where coaches realized that it’s somewhat absurd to keep giving the Bulls one All Star when they’ve been kicking this much ass for the past year and a half
Juiceboxjerry - February 9, 2012
Yeah
Marc gasol, iggy, josh smith, hibbert, those numbers arent all star either
Rondo flat out sucks
Trey23 - February 9, 2012
I agree with you about Deng's numbers not being All Star worthy
so I don’t really disagree with Hollinger either. However, it’s just annoying how Hollinger pretends PER is a perfect measure of what happens on the basketball court, without acknowledging what it doesn’t measure. I’ve made this point before – I think he’s one of the smartest NBA analysts, but that kind of practice is just a dishonest use of statistics.
bryield - February 9, 2012
Yeah
It’s because his 2nd job is selling PER. It’s a shame really.
tuluse - February 9, 2012
Yeah, it's funny how he tries to pretend like defense really matters
but then when it comes time for All star voting, he runs right back to PER. I think PER is a great stat, but to act like it’s the be-all end-all, is just silly.
Juiceboxjerry - February 10, 2012
Using only one stat is the best way to evaluate players!
SRQman - February 10, 2012
By PER Boozer has been our 2nd best player
I don’t think so Hollinger.
If people were smart they would tell him about defense and maybe use some fancy +/- numbers to show Deng’s impact, but instead we’re just going to get lame insults which lets Hollinger take the “I’m smarter than you route.”
tuluse - February 9, 2012
You are right
Deng is currently #1 in the league for plus-minus
c4 - February 10, 2012
and considering how many minutes he plays, it's damn impressive
Jaina - February 10, 2012
he was ninth last year, too
Osaka - February 10, 2012 via mobile
Hollinger also can ask the stars their thoughts on Luol
I mean you had Kobe going crazy about how good he was a few years ago (and he is better today, more all around).
Plus Derrick Rose is choosing him as the all star over Boozer and Noah, both fringe all star caliber (Boozer was at one time almost lock all star caliber).
And they’ve had Pierce, Lebron, Wade, etc all discuss how tough Luol is.
I think that’s a better judge than his friggin PER. Hollinger sucks ass, and has for a while now.
majoyenrac - February 10, 2012
The Bulls' 4-3 record without Deng may have put him over the brink.
If Deng had a better backup, as Noah does, he might not have made it. I’m not convinced that Deng is a better player than Noah, but he does seem more indispensable to the Bulls’ present line up.
Tim S. - February 10, 2012
i think there is more to it because in theory, ronnie should be a pretty nice backup to deng at the SF spot.
TheMoon - February 10, 2012
Brewer's a bit undersized for a wing man.
And he’s offensively challenged.
Tim S. - February 10, 2012
he has flaws, otherwise we wouldnt even be having this discussion about him being a backup.
but hes good, and the bulls really suffer when he starts at SF. also, noah’s backup is easily one of the most offensively challenged players in the league, so im not sure that argument works.
TheMoon - February 10, 2012
But Asik shuts them down.
Actually, you and Osaka bring up a good point. Perhaps it isn’t starting Brewer at SF that hurts so much as it is losing him at SG when Rip is out as well. At any rate, my original point stands — the fact that a top coach and a top team are so obviously reliant on Deng had, I judge, a great deal to do with the coaches’ vote — more so than any purely statistical measures. And, ironically, the games Deng missed may just have helped him, since the Bulls went 4-3 with him out.
Tim S. - February 10, 2012
Brewer is fine as a starter when he doesn't have to play next to KK
i.e. it’s Rip’s fault
Osaka - February 10, 2012 via mobile
well, he's a fine starting 2
and even though technically he’s the 2 next to korver he still gets the tougher wing assignment. having deng be out against bron (although rip was in that game) and melo was a bit unfortunate, heh.
Jaina - February 10, 2012
we lost noah last year and kept winning
JustAnotherFan - February 10, 2012
That's precisely my point.
Although last year the primary back up was Thomas.
Tim S. - February 10, 2012
was hoping that his missed time might have a positive influence
rather than negative. obviously returning before voting time gave him the final edge, since he played really well in the 2 games back.
also, marc stein’s picks were really close. missed 2 guys in the east, 1 in the west.

He sucks. PER is overrated (no D). It is a good metric, but nothing like a be all end all that he constantly argues it as being.

Hollinger started all that Rose isn’t anywhere near CP3 b.s. crap, and him being on ESPN gives him the most viewership on it.

Belize - February 10, 2012 via mobile
OKC has some issues
They have some great players. Durant is great, Harden is getting there, and Westbrook is pretty damn good, but it’s all isolation with them. When one of them has it going, they just isolate. Same shit every time. A team like the Bulls or Heat would fucking rape that. At this point, I think Westbrook is an awesome SHOOTING guard. He is not a point guard. Sort of a D Wade-light.
Juiceboxjerry - February 10, 2012
i think today was the first time i realized that not only are westbrook and rose not of the same caliber, they arent even the same type of player.
and your iso comment is spot on.
TheMoon - February 10, 2012
really?
I dunno, I thought it was pretty obvious. But yeah. Westbrook isn’t really a PG
Prevenge - February 10, 2012
They were really similar when they came into the league
Both were crazy athletes, with a ton of speed, limited jumpers and not known for the best passing ability. Rose had much better ball handling skills, Westbrook was better defensively.
Westbrook has improved his ball handling, improved his jumper a bit, but otherwise is roughly the same (he’s a pretty great player).
Rose has transformed his jumper into a real weapon (he can shoot now), he has improved his passing and overall floor game, and he’s improved his defense.
They are less alike now than they were.
majoyenrac - February 10, 2012
I always remember this quote from Ron Adams, who coached them both.
Particularly the line I put in bold. I have a feeling that if Rose were playing with Durant and Harden, his game would change accordingly, and he would have no problem with that.
“I think Derrick is more of a point guard than Russell is. Russell is a capable playmaker, but terrific scorer, terrific offensive rebounder, as is Derrick. Both are terrific athletes. Russell is a marvelous kid, and a top-of-the-line athlete. He’s got Michael Jordan kind of athletic ability and he’s slightly bigger than Derrick, he’s 6’4"ish. Derrick is very similar athletically. Derrick is also a phenomenal athlete. Also, I would say genius, if I can use that word. The real foundation in Derrick’s makeup, which is different from any player that I’ve worked with, is that he has no agenda. He doesn’t go into a game saying I’m averaging 24.5 points per game and I’ve got to score 24.5 points. His approach to the game is phenomenal. Russell has a stronger desire to score. His personality is kind of built around that a little bit more, so I think that separates them some more. From an assist standpoint, both are pretty much at the same statistical point in the top ten in assists. The context in which Russell plays is a more up-and-down the court context, which is helpful for him. We kind of play a different game here. We are a pretty good open court team, but also a pretty good half-court team. I have no doubts that if Derrick were a different kind of person he could lead the league in scoring, His jump shot is coming along well, his three point shot is coming along well. It’s a terrific ride where every night he’s operating against stacked defenses. One advantage Russell has is that Kevin Durant is in front of him, and Kevin Durant is a monster. "

tuluse - February 10, 2012

Belize - February 10, 2012
I don't agree with this.
OKC runs some great sets. Brooks put them in place twice their previous game to get great looks to beat the clock. (I believe one to end the 1st quarter, then one to end the 3rd.)
They play a very good team game. The one thing about them that’s a weakness is RW0 truly looks to score 1st. So if he brings the ball down and thinks he has a spot to attack, then backs off, he’s used about 10 to 12 secs off the shot clock. That puts them in a scramble mode to get a shot off and that’s when it looks like iso hell.
Out of timeouts their execution is tremendous. And in crunch time, they don’t make many mistakes. I didn’t watch last night’s game, and GS isn’t a fair measuring stick to judge them on, but they never should’ve won that game vs. GS, but their coaching, team game, and execution gave them a win.
I try to watch them whenever I can because Kevin Durant is a matchup nightmare. He has a rare set of tools to work with and he’s improving on defense and sort of developing an edge to his game and demeanor that will only take his game to the next level. That team is a lot of fun to watch.

Seriously, who was the big wig that said.. “You know, having the best postgame sports show on TV really isn’t working out. It needs something else. We should do the equivalent of what MNF did when they added Dennis Miller. Yeah screw the more deserving Chris Weber. Let’s add Shaq and give him so much promotion and invest so much, that we couldn’t replace him if we wanted to.”
They have actually ruined my Thursday night basketball experience. He’s terrible and Barkley is getting tired of his ass.
Dils - February 10, 2012
i agree...webber was such a better fit
Belize - February 10, 2012 via mobile
Weber is awful too
tuluse - February 10, 2012
shaq doesn't work hard, doesn't have a good b-ball iq, isn't funny, and is only happy when the spotlight is on him
but other than that, he’s a perfect fit
Basketball Smurf - February 10, 2012
ok, so any chance of this?
ASG: Rose, Deng, Thibs
3 Point: Watson, Korver
Shooting Stars: Hamilton or Boozer, Pippen, Sylvia Fowles
Slam Dunk: Brewer
Rookie/Soph: Asik
kpd - February 10, 2012
Brew seems to have lost a lot of his hops since that hamstring injury
trig - February 10, 2012
Slam dunk brew?
He would need 20 minutes as he chases the ball after his 22 straight missed attempts
Trey23 - February 10, 2012
Sticky Blazing Chronic Stars:
Joakim Noah?

Two years in a row Rose has gotten more votes than Wade
I think it’d be hillarious if next year Wade has to come off the bench because Rose gets more votes than him and the other guard spot goes to Lin because China votes him in.
kpd - February 10, 2012
LIN 4 MVP!!!!
Geo4MVP - February 10, 2012
China doesn't know who Jeremy Lin is.
He’s not an import.
Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. - February 10, 2012
Err... nevermind.
Ugh. This is gonna stick in my craw if he gets more popular than DRose.
Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. - February 10, 2012
its too late doc, ITS LIN-SANITY!
Geo4MVP - February 10, 2012
first of all he aint chinese
But honestly if he had a couple more weeks to accumulate votes I guarantee he would be in.

One thing I'm a LITTLE more excited about...
Thibs is 5 days away from being named the East squad’s coach. I shudder to think what the Big Douche Three will have to say about, y’know, actually playing defense in the ASG.
Doshi - February 10, 2012
And here Lu was thinking he wouldn't have to play 41 minutes in the All-Star Game
CowBearsFan - February 10, 2012
After reading the article Sam wrote
I think Lu is thrilled with Thibs and would do anything he asked of him.
sue369 - February 10, 2012
not surprised, thibs revived his career basically
after he was marginalized by vinny. didn’t realize he hated scott skiles though. guess skiles will never be able to escape players with fiery hatred for him hahaha.
Jaina - February 10, 2012
hopefully he runs wade out there for 46 minutes,
and then there’s overtime.
obnoxious american - February 10, 2012
haha i was thinking the same shit
Play wade n lebron the entirety of the game
RM. - February 10, 2012 via mobile
Who else wants to see this?
Rose/Wade/Deng/Bitch/Ostrich? That would be FUN AS HECK to see!!!
Doshi - February 10, 2012
Amazing
Great News, he deserves it a lot, hope East wins

yeah, i thought that stance was well known
they’ve thought that forever. but at least it’s not because of lack of NBA love – it’s the reinsdorfs.
Jaina - February 10, 2012
well the reason is noble at least.
unless it’s just a front for some other reason. though i’d have to think reinsdorf would make a metric ass ton of money from it.
obnoxious american - February 10, 2012
I sort of view this as a lifetime achievement type of all star selection for Deng
Not that he isn’t deserving this year, but really there were a couple other guys more deserving. However he has been a near all star several times. He’s always been a good player – really only one down year – but his role has changed since Rose was drafted. Before Rose, Deng was expected to lead the team and, although he put up good numbers, he really wasn’t capable of doing that consistently. But now his role matches his skills and abilities better. He’s the glue guy on the team – willing and capable of performing many different roles as the need arises. That, combined with general maturity and experience, has rewarded him with a well deserved all star.

So you'd prefer that I never come back, or that I come back and troll? ;)
I do think he was deserving, but I also think Lu was. Someone always loses out.
I’ve always kind of liked guys to get rest over the break – more PT in a condensed season doesn’t thrill me. On the other hand, it would have been nice not to have to listen to the whining over Josh getting snubbed.

Prevenge - February 10, 2012
I can confidently say I always loved Lu Deng
and everyone who doubted him should feel ample amounts of shame and embarassment.
I’ve always loved Lu except for the times I bashed him b/c: of his jumpshot, his inability to put the ball on the floor, his lack of playmaking skills, his determination to kill every fast break, those 2 years he disappeared under VDN, his unwillingness to shoot in the 4th and his lack of 1 on 1 moves.
Deng’s come a long way. Congrats
Basketball Smurf - February 10, 2012
U loved him 57% of the time, congrats!
