Looks like the news from the weekend that Rose has been battling back issues deserves a little more attention than I gave it this morning.
Here's what he said post-game Saturday:
Derrick Rose went off for 15 points in the first quarter of Saturday night's 113-90 win over the Milwaukee Bucks and then spent most of the second quarter lying on his back, wincing at times, while assistant trainer Jeff Tanaka worked him over on the far end of the bench.
What was the problem?
"My back tends to get tight a little bit," Rose said. "That's why my shots were kind of flat. But I know after tonight and the day off [Sunday], I'll get my back worked on and that should be out the way quick."
Rose isn't sure when exactly the back issue flared up, but he is confident that he can control it.
"It just got tight on me and that can easily go away," he said.
After that day off (though there was mention of a practice, so maybe it wasn't a day off at all), Rose only lasted 11 minutes before exiting with back issues, and didn't play the entire second half.
Back injuries are usually trickier to diagnose than most, so combining that with Bulls subterfuge, who really knows what we'll be told. For what it's worth, Rose post-game was 'being positive', though he also mentioned it is due to his foot/leg issues.
As for the rest of the Bulls, they actually got a taste of Derrick Rose's absence early through foul trouble, as Derrick's quick two fouls were the only thing that went wrong in an 11 of 12 start from the field, leading to a 35-14 lead after the first quarter that was never really threatened (outside of the realm that is Thibodeau's head). The Bulls offense absolutely toyed with them: even with Avery Johnson getting his team to play hard, the Bulls would use the Nets aggression against them through their passing and cutting. When the Nets would back off to a zone, the Bulls would either shoot or board (or both) their way out of it.
The Nets were a borderline playoff contender even when fully healthy, and for Monday night they were missing a lot of players. So they were in deep trouble, from the outset but had to be really scared of their chances when seeing Keith Bogans start and scoring 6 points. (Zing!)
Carlos Boozer was dominant inside (!) and out, even getting to the line 6 times. The 3-pointers were falling all night, 9-15, and while some of it was charmed, (Ronnie Brewer's second-half off-balance shot from way-deep, for one) a lot of it was just perfect offense both in the half-court and outworking New Jersey in transition. The Bulls finished with 29 assists on 40 field goals, and it was as effortless and wonderful to see as it looks on paper.
It was a Luol Deng type of game, really, and not surprising that he had 13 points in that first quarter, continuing to look really good in his return from injury. He finished with 19, after resting most of the second half with the Bulls more-than-comfortably ahead. Just kidding! He played all but 3 minutes in that half. Hey, that's Thibsball, and part of it is getting to see so many effort-fueled blowouts in the first place. But the really easy week continues with visits to New Orleans and Charlotte, so maybe Derrick and the trainers can 'think negative' to get that back right with real rest.

So, all of our players keep getting hurt
while the coach plays them insane amounts of minutes, in a brutal schedule, and we’re supposed to act like everything is cool because he’s Thibs. Got it.
Juiceboxjerry - February 6, 2012
Well, it's not going to change.
It’s stupid, but what’s the point of getting upset about it? Thibs is Thibs.
HawkeyeBoiler - February 6, 2012
That argument only applies to Boozer, so cut it out.
Juiceboxjerry - February 6, 2012

yeah, this is not your typical 82 game season
and to make it worse, this season is longer than what it should be. I hate this condensed schedule

rose is a burden as of right now with his injuries. He wouldn’t be helping the bulls with his limited range and motility.

Was at the game tonight
And the half-full arena was 2/3rds Bulls Fans. The Scalabrine chants literally started in the first six minutes.
It was disappointing to see Rose leave early due to foul trouble, if only because having CJ try to cover Deron allowed Deron to look far better than he otherwise would have. Not nearly as interesting as the last few games, but not bad for $8.
Oh and Boozer looked good down in the paint to start the night, but once he started getting contact he retreated to his jumper pretty fast (which was falling, but still) and didn’t challenge Humphries or Williams as hard as I would have hoped. He should be able to dominate the Nets bigs.
Hawkeyes - February 6, 2012
$8 Dollars?

it was like $25 and included parking, tickets in the lower level of the Bradley Center, 2 beer drinks and a special Bucks glass.
They played the pre James heat, but it was post the Johnny “Fish” trade, and they were rolling….(that game though Bogut sat out, I think Salmons sat out, and Delfino almost died it seemed by landing awkwardly on his head, and the Heat blew ’em out….which was fine since I went to see D. Wade (from Marquette). It was fairly crowded that day..
I still have the glass, it’s pretty nice.

dantheman3k - February 7, 2012
I haven't seen anyone appear upset by Thibs though
Rose respects the hell out of him and the team follows Rose.
Plus Boozer and Noah with the 4th quarter benchings said nothing….which is very unusual for stars of their caliber (especially Boozer with his all star cred and huge contract—as he knows him sitting is going to start a field day with the fans)./
majoyenrac - February 7, 2012
i think booz, noah, and the rest of the team have been convinced to think in a more of a "the whole is greater than the sum of parts"
thinking of playing time and stats is what the wizards do best. Right, McGee? lmao.
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
these guys want the title
lets hope things remain cool if/when the title is won. too many times after players win a championship, people change, your resolve lessens, and role players go after big money, and that’s that.
given that, it is a small miracle that the jordan-led Bulls stayed together in their basic formation (Jordan/Pippen/Phil/Rebounder/good bench players) as long as they did. Though Horace Grant was definitely a casualty of the above mentality it would seem.
the only other team i can think of recently that managed to buck this trend was the Parker-Ginobli-Duncan Spurs. Hell, they are still doing it now. 1st place in the west last year, 3 games out of first right now. That’s unbelievable.
it remains to be seen if the trio of Deng/Rose/Noah will last over a 10 year period like the Spurs trio did. Given how injury prone both Noah and Deng are, the odds are against it, but we’ll see.
anorexorcist - February 7, 2012

Hatchet job without context
He was asked about winning the game versus Billups’ injury. Bittersweet refers to the victory. Seems completely appropriate. If VDN is such an idiot, one wouldn’t need to slant coverage to make it seem so.
Gentleman Jim - February 7, 2012
The victory was "bittersweet" because they won yet lost Billups nonetheless.
Now that does make a lot more sense.
jpx7 - February 7, 2012
Actually, he's such an idiot that almost everyone expects him to say stupid things.
If somebody else had been quoted saying something like that in a similar situation; people would immediately question the context. With VDN on the other hand..

Bittersweet?
What does he even think that word means? Just “bitter”?
jpx7 - February 7, 2012
C.J. Watson had a good all-around game

This was the second game of his career that he had 10+ points, 10+ assists, and 5+ rebounds.

if roses back is an issue, u may have to
Belize - February 7, 2012
i wouldnt lose sleep on his back injury
typically, thsi becomes an issue if he becomes reckless with his back injury and refuses to take rest, but hes going to be forced to rest if the back tightens up. Hes going to rest and hell be fine before sundays game. His toe injury, imho, its a bigger issue than his back injury.
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
that's the rub
the combo of rose’s urge to play through pain (so he’s gonna lie a tad bit & the whole “i gotta carry the city on my back b/c im from chicago”) + thibs’s drill instructor “suck it up” mentality = no rest
hope not though
Belize - February 7, 2012

ChicagoStyle - February 7, 2012
I've always sort of scoffed at all the CJ Watson praise here
But he ranks 7th among PGs in PER? Good god. Ahead of Curry, Parker, Jennings, Lowry, DWill, and Rondo. Say what you want about PER, that’s pretty incredible. If he sustains this level of play the Bulls would be foolish not to cash him in.

I go to a school consisting of people from east coast schools. However, I have never heard one celtics fan, knicks fan, heat fan, nets fan etc. ever compliment Rose as the best pg in the league or they would bash him as not being a “true” pg but being a sg. alot of my friends who are laker fans watch the bulls game jsut to watch rose go into beast mode, lol.
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
celtics and lakers fans
don’t have that insecurity about their team fulfilling expectations, as they just won a title and they both have certain hall of famers on their club, even if they are all past prime now. they can therefore appreciate some of the younger guys in the league more.
heat fans, knicks fans, hell thunder fans (a new breed i’m noticing this year lol, mostly backed by the good old blogosphere) may appreciate rose’s gifts but they don’t like him and its primarily because they see him as competition for their team. can’t say i blame them. right now it’s a 3-way race between lebrick/durant/rose to see who gets a ring first.

T.Moore - February 8, 2012
yeah, nothing more lame than a fanbase who thought they were getting LeBron!
your friendly BullsBlogger - February 7, 2012
hey, thats us!!!
wait….
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
what do they have to look forward to besides that?!
Prevenge - February 7, 2012
Um
They’re pretty much right although they might not get him until the offseason.
Gentleman Jim - February 7, 2012
After last night, the Bulls have the #1 offensive efficiency in the league.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CHI/2012.html
Defense has slipped to #4, though.
fundamentallysound - February 7, 2012
fuck!!!!!
Trey23 - February 7, 2012
missing Deng for so long must've hurt.
I assume that’s where the slip happened.
dantheman3k - February 7, 2012
yeah, and the road trip hasnt been so nice either
its jsut wearing us down and you can tell how it has effected rose. Tightened back is a good indication of lack of muscle rest and he needs a week off. I dont like seeing rose struggling b/c of his injuries.
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
That's a huge accomplishment
especially because the lockout has caused league wide scoring to go down. The somehow jumped from the 11th most efficient team to first by maintaining the same efficiency as last year with 108.6 this year and 108.3 last. the defense has actually been better than last years, 98.4 compared to 100.3 last year. So basically the bulls have maintained their offensive mojo from last year while the rest of the league can’t score for shit. I think we still have to wait to see how it works in the playoffs still since the change between years has not been enormous.

I don't follow that stat closely, but...
wouldn’t a number of blowouts against bad teams make the Bulls look better (offensively) than they actually are?
Another way to put it is: Can someone parse the rating out and compare the Bulls OE when facing above .500 teams against the other top offensive teams (using the same parsing)?
Paul Warfield - February 7, 2012
ill get to it :)
give me 10 mins…
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
well, i tried and i failed miserably
however, i did get the spread on how well their OE is on the road if that helps. Additionally, they did play alot more tough teams on the road compared to home.

Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
so, if oyu were to ask me, they have done far better on the road than at home
and the road games usually wear down teams and the bulls seem to stay pretty consistent even o nthe road.
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
That would hold true for every single team.
The Bulls have had a pretty weak schedule so far so the offensive efficiency is probably overstated but I also don’t think it’s a stretch to say they’re much improved from last season when Rip is healthy.
Ozzie Montana - February 7, 2012
most def and its encouraging to see their OE on the road is pretty damn good.
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
I doubt it...
meaning that the better teams are much more likely to build up gaudy stats against bad teams, and some win such games by wider margins than others.
I’d be surprised if there weren’t some changes in the OE list if it were parsed out as I suggested.
I do agree that the Bulls are clearly better offensively with Rip, and also CJ is playing better this year on that end.
Paul Warfield - February 7, 2012
Generally speaking, larger samples are better. Blowing out bad teams is the hallmark of a great team.
fundamentallysound - February 8, 2012
i'd be interested to see it compared w/ last year
seems like we’ve been able to build and hold a lead a lot better. we won a lot of games, but a lot of them were closer than necessary.
Jaina - February 7, 2012
Why don't you just do it yourself?
It’s not that difficult.
bryield - February 7, 2012
i guess im the hero that BaB deserves, but not the one it needs :(
Geo4MVP - February 7, 2012
In general blowing out bad teams is actually a better indicator for being a strong team
Just sayin’
tuluse - February 7, 2012
Yes. This is correct. Someone reads basketball-reference.com, too :) .
fundamentallysound - February 8, 2012
