The Bulls and Celtics both blew leads in their Thursday game at the United Center, but the Bulls pulled out the 89-80 win. Kent McDill called it a "game of streaks" and that it was.
The Celtics scored 12 in the first four minutes of the game, but only 68 over the final 44, despite a 22-7 run over an eight-minutes stretch of their 26-point third quarter.
The same Bulls that gave up those two runs to have the Bulls playing catch-up early blew a 16-point lead in that third quarter was the defense that dominated to allow only 34 points in the other 36 minutes of the game. The help was quick all contest, but recovering to shooters was inconsistent. And, as the Bulls are crafted, the rebounding killed Cs' possessions to reward the defense.
On the other end, the Bulls Bench Mob had problems converting possessions, but the offensive rebounds turned the contest into a game of keep away. The Bulls out-hustled a Celtics squad uncharacteristically crashing the boards very hard. The Bulls still won those battles to elongate their own possessions and prevent the Celtics from getting into an offensive rhythm for the remainder of the half. Limiting Boston's touches had them iced to setup a 20-3 run when Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah, and Luol Deng returned to the game with Mike James running the offense at the point to relieve the struggling C.J. Watson and John Lucas III.
Doc Rivers still runs the Tom Thibodeau defense in Boston, but with a lot more zone. That made it difficult for the Bulls to get inside without erratic ball movement; and no one knows better than Thibs that this is the only way to get inside against a defense fixated on spacing and strong-side aggressiveness (27 of Bulls' 30 FGs were assisted). In the second quarter, Mike James and his bigs used the Cs pick n' roll defense against them by turning it into a three-man game, as the pick setter was simply a tool to handle the ball in the middle of the floor (Boozer: five assists) -- instead of being a scorer -- and using the defense's imbalance find the most efficient shot.
As Doc is prone to do, he adjusted to put more balance into the zones, so he Bulls couldn't simply put the ball in the weak side (James: four assists in 17 minutes) or open up the middle with widespread perimeter ball movement (Deng: ten assists).
The Cs zones also conflicted with their need to rebound the ball well to kill Bulls possessions, so when the ball couldn't get inside, Bulls ball-handlers used their drives to the hole to open up shooters. The Bulls took advantage by shooting 10-for-21 on 3s -- compared to only 17 long-2 attempts (hitting only two), which the Cs defense wants to force at all times because they're inefficient and easier for helpers to recover for challenges.
The Cs attempted the same, but only went 3-for-15 on 3s (Paul Pierce and Mickael Pietrus combined to go 0-for-7). The only strong stretches for the Cs offense involved a couple of 3s by Ray Allen and defensive breakdowns where Pierce and Rajon Rondo were able to penetrate. Otherwise, Boston was largely pushed to the outside and strong challenges when anticipating 3s forced Cs to step up into the 2-point zone for long-2s -- on which they shot 9-for-25 (36%).
In a game of forcing long-2s, the Bulls won -- and with that, the game. Forcing the most inefficient shot can backfire when the rebounds aren't grabbed, as the offensive boards on those shots create very efficient shots. But the Cs don't have the athleticism to crash the boards on the offensive end and effectively get back on defense, so the Bulls almost made holding the Cs to six second chance points on six offensive boards look easy [.pdf].
The Bulls' ball movement added a high risk to the offense, which became 17 turnovers that Boston exploited for 18 points. And though the Bulls knew it'd be difficult to convert at the rim, the ball got there (17-for-32, 53.2%). The Bulls only scored 12 second chance points on 3-for-13 shooting in a game where Boston held them to 39.7% shooting, but the 16 offensive rebounds simply didn't reward the Cs defense enough. The Bulls' 34% offensive rebounding rate (ORR) and ten treys at 47.7% negated Boston's 0.95 points-per-possession D enough to score a full point-per-possession. And enough to reward their own defense for stops and minimize the Celtics' possessions just days after Boston beat them running the floor.

nice writeup
but the whole boozer’s “type of performance is something that terrifies Eastern teams” crap is what it is: crap. Im tired of seeing this guy have big games against players/teams that wont mean crap in the playoffs..i wanna see him have a monster game like this against Orl/Miami or even indiana.
Belize - February 17, 2012
at least you can compliment him having a big game against one of the top 5 defensive teams in the NBA
Sure, I would also love consistency against the good teams/monster teams but this is a nice start.
Geo4MVP - February 17, 2012
umm..no
Belize - February 17, 2012
The problem with Boozer is in his head.
Rotating on defense, cutting to the basket, not hesitating when he gets a kick out pass from someone. If he plays like he did last night, thibs can trust him to finish games and now we suddenly have an offensive threat from all 5 positions at the end of games. Boozer always has been a better offensive threat than taj, if he can play with his head on straight and make the right decisions like last night, we become a much better team.
Krandle - February 17, 2012
i saw something scary
boozer was in the post, pietrus recieves a pass on the left baseline for a corner three, BOOZER RUNS OUT AND CONTESTS THE 3!!!!…..mayans were right man….
piccolomair - February 17, 2012
Its "maya" not mayans
I think we need Boozer to be aggressive on offense like last night. That will be enough for us. I’m sure the team doesn’t expect a lot from him defensively and frankly they don’t need it if everyone’s healthy and Boozer is being a monster on offense.

Calling the Maya peoples Mayans could be considered boderline insulting.
Bullforlife - February 17, 2012
I agree with both of you.
Boozer stepped up against a great defense no doubt, but that’s different than stepping up against a great team.
OKC has an awful defense, but the team itself is terrifyingly strong and can put up number fast. I’d rather see Boozer have this type of game against them simply because it would show he can handle the pressure against intimidating teams, and match their offensive production point-for-point.
Boozer is great offensive player (there I said it), the problem with his disappearing is more in his head. He has to believe he can out-maneuver, out-hustle, out-play even the best teams in the league.
Micdiddy - February 17, 2012
I shit on Boozer just as much as the next guy, but this is just plain dumb
I understand caring about the type of team he produces against. The best defense Linsanity has faced is the Lakers. If Boozer has a big game against the Raptors, I don’t give a shit. But the Celtics have been one of the best defensive teams in basketball this year.
Dwight Howard against the Celtics:
4-15 for 18 points
6-12 for 16 points
Amare Stoudemire against the Celtics:
7-15 for 16 points
Andrew Bynum against the Celtics
6-15 for 16 points
Carlos Boozer against the Celtics
9-16 for 22 points
11-15 for 23 points
Do I want to see him do it against the Heat? Absolutely. But you are being a fucking hater for no reason. He played a great game against a great defensive team without Derrick Rose in the game (did it twice btw). Give it time, you will have plenty of reasons to hate in the future, but this is not one of them.
DRoseO1 - February 17, 2012
and more importantly, Boozer and Noah are finally developing chemistry
they have looked like our best combination of big men for the last 10 games or so, something they rarely did last season.
Basketball Smurf - February 17, 2012
That's quietly gone unnoticed
But maybe the most important story throughout this stretch
Option27 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
YES YES YES
They look so good together I completely FORGOT the whole “Booz and Jo can’t play together” thing,
This is a huge improvement, they literally dish assists to each other left and right.
Micdiddy - February 17, 2012
yes, but...
how much of that is due to Rose’s absence (i.e. defenses being more spread out, and not on a hair-trigger to collapse on a Rose drive)?
Paul Warfield - February 17, 2012
No, now instead
they are collapsing on Boozer and Noah, who dish it out to Korver or Deng for the three…
Itsa so beautiful
ThorCo - February 17, 2012
i hope that's a typo
and not a jar jar impersonation
SidM - February 17, 2012
i don't think it has anything to do w/Rose being out
except for perhaps increased opportunity. They both are good passers so it is kind of shocking it took them so long to start hooking up on interior passes. I just think they have a better sense of where the other one is going to be and how to play off each other.
Basketball Smurf - February 17, 2012
I hope that you're right...
but when Rose is dribbling up top, always threatening to drive, it’s hard to imagine that Boozer and Noah will have the same room to operate.
If it is simply a matter of the chemistry clicking in, then, as you suggest, it took an awfully long time…
Paul Warfield - February 17, 2012
why would they have less room?
I don’t think teams pack the lane less against the Bulls when Rose doesn’t play. I think the spacing you saw yesterday was more a result of Deng hitting 3s and Korver being on the floor than Rose being out.
Basketball Smurf - February 17, 2012
they were also playing more zone than usual...
but in any case, I’m referring to the past several games, not just last night.
I see most teams as being very sensitive about making it tough for Rose to get to the rim, and it appears to me that the lane is generally more clogged as a result.
Paul Warfield - February 17, 2012
but what I'm saying is that
the lane is clogged no matter what because the Bulls lack outside shooters. Teams don’t start suddently unclogging the lane because Rose isn’t around. The reason the Celtics went zone last night was to stop the inside play of the Bulls, just as teams do when Rose is in the lineup. There is no reason to unclog the lane when Rose is out of the game – the Bulls still want to score inside whether its Boozer, Deng or Noah.
I think the inside passing is better because its better, not because Rose is out. Noah and Boozer are both good passers. They didn’t get a chance to play together a lot last season, and now that both have been healthy for 30 straight games, they are developing solid chemistry. It really doesn’t have anything to do with Rose in my opinion.
Basketball Smurf - February 17, 2012
again...
I hope that you are correct, but have my doubts. It’s not simply a matter of how clogged the lane may be, as the Bulls have shown a tendency (in my view) to generally over-rely on Rose offensively. There has been some movement away from that tendency this season, which is good, but I see a different dynamic when he is off the court.
Ideally, with Rose and Rip healthy, there will be the same cutting and movement from the big men that we have been seeing over the past few games. I’m just more hopeful than confident.
Paul Warfield - February 17, 2012
I find it really difficult to believe that playing offense is anything but easier with Rose in the game
tuluse - February 17, 2012
in theory...
and especially give how often he is double-teamed, it certainly should be. But it doesn’t always work out that way in practice.
Paul Warfield - February 17, 2012
I think they hesitate when Rose is playing,
Always thinking, is this shot better than one Rose could have if I passed out to him. I havent seen Boozer hesitate at all when he gets the ball 15 feet + out. That pump fake he would always do. When Rose is playing I think hes afraid to make a bad decision and second guesses himself.
Krandle - February 17, 2012
Derrick is now pretty good at drawing the D and passing out to a teammate in position to score
but with him out I feel like we’ve seen a lot more “hockey assists” where guys are passing to a teammate in a great position to make a scoring pass. Lu, Noah, and Boozer have made several of these 1-2-3 plays in the last few games.
I’m going to be optimistic and think that we’ll continue to see this type of play once Derrick is back. Rip has shown some pretty good passing acumen too. We’ve seen so little of the five starters playing together that I think we’ve forgotten how good we’re going to be when (when…? when!) we get them all back.
DLRoth - February 17, 2012
That's a good point
Plus Deng is turning into a good point forward. It will be interesting to see the continued development of Boozer/Noah and point forward Deng…especially as it relates to using Rose without the ball and taking his man low, cutting to the basket, etc. Plus these two aspects should give us more options at the end of games.
hlac - February 17, 2012
celts d this season has been hit or miss + your acting like Boozer ballin' chris wilcox & old ass KG is an accomplishment
and i gotta ask: what the hell does jeremy lin have to do with this?
Belize - February 17, 2012
There have been 9 games where big men scored 20 or more points against the Celtics this year
Boozer has 2 of them.
There are plenty of reasons to hate Boozer, but seriously he’s been awesome against a very good Celtics defense. So just give it a rest and I’m sure some time in the next week there will be a valid reason to hate him.
tuluse - February 17, 2012
rest it is

You can't have a hit or miss defense and be ranked 3rd in the NBA.
Ozzie Montana - February 17, 2012
they're #1 in opponent PPG
at least were until last night. (don’t know if last night’s games affected anything.)
Jaina - February 17, 2012
have you seen some of their loses? not saying that the D is horrendous but they catch a blip once in a while + my point was more in 1 on 1 matchups..always seems that booz cant power/bully his way with more established 4 and 5’s..maybe im reaching but it feels like deja vu
Belize - February 17, 2012
Garnet is still good defensively
tuluse - February 17, 2012

haslem is underated imo

dude is kinda like taj with a more consistent jumper
piccolomair - February 17, 2012
It's become more routine and smooth between Carlos and Noah.
If you watch their flow together, Joakim is finding angles to draw his man from Carlos and making the right read if a double comes. He positions himself just slightly to the elbow where he’s not necessarily a threat to shoot, but a very good passer/driver to the lane. They’ve been most effective when one of the two (usually Noah) receives a solid pass from a cutting player at the top of or middle of the key. At that time there is a slight check they both do that seems novel in their play style and coached into them when they look to drive, draw, and scoop a pass to the other. It seems to me they’re forming a front court shared identity of toughness on the boards which is absolutely necessary for our team since we are first and foremost a defense and rebounding squad. It’s very encouraging.
Carlos has been progressively attacking the basket more and more, absorbing contact, and either finishing or getting fouled. Lets hope this trend continues.
Doc Heff - February 17, 2012
ohh..this was cool too
Belize - February 17, 2012
hahaha showed this pic to one of my boston friends
big celtics fan… thought he would get a kick out of it. he said “Hahahaha that makes me both really happy and really sad at the same time!”
Jaina - February 17, 2012
I really liked how Deng stepped up in this game.
He’s our “Second All-Star” but he rarely takes the offensive load even when Rose is out, preferring to stay in his “glue” role.
This time the team looked to him to lead them offensively and he pulled through with incredible 3-point shooting and terrific passing. Great to see him continue to bloom, and who knows, he could be that second scorer we’ve been looking for all along to take the load off Rose…if he gets better at creating a shot that is….
Micdiddy - February 17, 2012
yea the 13 points in the 4th were terrific
luol dengs 3pt shot is so money this year man, especially when he runs into the shot, which will be more awesome when rose and rip come back and are sprinting down the floor
piccolomair - February 17, 2012
hasn't been money at all really
but it’s gotten a lot better since right before he got hurt.

Belize - February 17, 2012
Serious question...
can Boozer not dunk? That missed “layup” last night infuriated me.
WindisBlowingOut! - February 17, 2012
he had two dunks in the game
but yea, that last one was pretty lame. To be fair though, he did somewhat tweak his ankle a few plays earlier…
piccolomair - February 17, 2012
I honestly think Boozer can't jump anymore.
Don’t know why but he simply doesn’t have the lift to make it above the rim consistently. Plus someone mentioned on here that he may also be afraid of getting injured. This is a guy who missed games last season for tripping over a fucking bag. I mean, he tweaked his ankle turning his body to run back on defense last night. No contact, no tripping, nothing. Seriously? Cmon man.
Bullforlife - February 17, 2012
that was me who said hes afraid of getting injured and hence why hes a shell of his all star self from the Jazz.
Geo4MVP - February 17, 2012
however, he ha shown these past gamea he can still put up performances like yesterday against good defenses but i doub th e can do it consistently

That missed dunk/layup is a perfect bit of data to support the hypothesis that while Booze
isn’t as explosive as he used to be, his mental game is the biggest threat to his production.
Doc Heff - February 17, 2012
Carlos Boozer's stat line against Boston
Boozer became the first Bulls’ player since Michael Jordan to score 20+ points, along with 15+ rebounds and 5+ assists in a game.
