Bulls 95, Bobcats 64: Bulls keep road blowout streak going without Rose

That's four straight 20+ point road wins for the Bulls, which I've read (and heard on NBATV) is a record. So that's neat. Watching the actual games isn't that exciting though it's easy to stay impressed with how locked-in the Bulls are. When discussing an emerging team like the Sixers or Pacers, the first indicator is winning at home, and then blowing out bad teams there. There is no disputing the Bulls are a great team, a different level, and they can blow out teams on the road, even missing their best player. When at this status, is it important that the Bulls never have an off night? Maybe not, the playoffs you assume all teams are going to be ready to play. But it's a mindset worth commending all the same.

The Bobcats meanwhile are terrible, and injuries hurt them even more than the Bulls because they replace average players with awful ones, whereas the Bulls have to endure some John Lucas time but not much else. Charlotte is both small and slight, yet to compound that they also can't shoot. Oh don't worry, they also can't take care of the ball. The Bulls started hot with a 30-point first quarter (a hallmark of their recent streak) behind 3-point shooting, and never had to worry much after that. Noah and Boozer were able to destroy the Bobcats inside (Biyombo actually looks like a talent, but needs way more strength), with Boozer actually unleashing a couple of baseline spin moves.

It was fun all-around if you were on the Bulls sidelines. I include Thibodeau screaming at his team when they're up 25, because I think that's fun for him. But you had the aforementioned Boozer post moves, Noah with a couple of tornadoes, the Bulls actually try an alley-oop (Lucas to Butler...it failed), Neil Funk getting in some digs at old foe Tyrus Thomas (who literally looks awful...why is he so thin?*), and a possession where Taj Gibson lost his shoe. That last bit inspired some must-watch video from Joakim Noah.

*[I was trying to remember all game, besides that infamous severely-protected draft pick the Bulls received for Tyrus, who did they get as rentals in that trade to match salaries? I did recall the Acie Law experience, but the player I was trying to conjure up was Flip Murray. Man, remember him?]

The Bulls, either as an organization or from a rare bout of sanity by coach Thibodeau, sat Rose on Friday. So, as much as actions to the contrary garner consternation in this space, I have to say great job by them. I'm trying to remember that in this insanely-good season where minutes for stars is a concern, one way to limit confusion is to just not really take Thibs at his word. Sam Smith provided a reminder:

Rose, though, is expected to play against Boston Sunday in the national TV game.

Russian defense minister, errr, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said it’s "still the same" with Rose.

"Day to day," said Thibodeau. "More precautionary. Just wanted to give him another day of rest. We’ll see where he is tomorrow. We’ll take it day by day."

Thibodeau plays this little game with reporters, who two or there times a day at practice and games ask him about Rose. Thibodeau always says day to day or game time decision, though C.J. Watson, who started for Rose, revealed after the game that Thibodeau had told the team Thursday that Rose wasn’t playing Friday. Thibodeau has this NFL mentality belief that you cannot give out information to your opponent.

The Boston game is notable, but may not be much more of a challenge. I suppose they could be fired-up after losing in Toronto Friday night, they don't really look to be in the same class as the Bulls. They're better than the teams the Bulls have absolutely destroyed in this road winning streak of theirs, so maybe something like a 10-point win is in the offering? The Bulls do have a pedestrian record against winning teams, so for a team always looking for challenges they can use that as motivation Sunday.

Ok, so now can we be angry that Rose played against the Hornets?:
Neil Hayes @bynhayes
Derrick Rose says he won’t know if he can play against #Celtics until he wakes up tomorrow. His back is still stiff. #Bulls
Neil Hayes @bynhayes
Derrick Rose can’t understand why he’s had so many injuries this season. He’s frustrated. #Bulls

Derrick should be getting the Rip Hamilton treatment right now. With this team, ans this hectic season, it’s no time for Thibs to preach his tough guy approach. Let the kid get all the way better so we don’t get Jeremy Lin’d out of the playoffs in the first round, please.

there was no reason for him to play in a few of these games.
And everyone realized that, except for the Coach. Isn't that troubling?

I mean, this wasn’t a case where a bunch of people were second guessing. People here, people in local newspapers, bloggers, everyone thought Rose should be sitting. Now he’s still hurting, with more important, and more difficult games coming up, and we’re just supposed to accept that. This has been a really rough patch for Thibs imo.

i think derrick might be part of the problem

derrick says he can play, thibs says “go to town”. who knows what the chain of command is on these decisions, but are they going to tell derrick no if he says he’s alright?

Yeah, pretty much

I mean, I saw Derrick play for about 2 seconds in that Hornets game, and it was more than obvious he wasn’t himself. You don’t think the training staff or Thibs can see these things in warmups, or shootaround, and just tell him to not play?

Plus, fuck “respecting every team”, he had no business playing against the Hornets regardless of how he looked. I know Thibs likes to pretend like that shouldn’t matter, but this is the real World, these things are important. The Hornets suck, here on Earth.

yeah i mean obv i'm hoping he plays tomorrow

cause i want to see him, but i’m hoping that if i do see him in uni tomorrow it’s because he’s on the mend and not forcing it.

these back issues really worry me. guess all we can hope for is that the treatment is working…

crux

but are they going to tell derrick no if he says he’s alright?

It’s an organizational failure if they allow the players to decide (as they have apparently done a number of times over the past couple of years).

they said no to Jordan.
the crux, indeed.

i don’t know why organizations don’t err on the side of caution with their multimillion dollar investments.

What makes you think he wouldn't be hurting if he had sat?
Nothing, I never said he wouldn't

This isn’t only about playing against Boston, this about long term health. He shouldn’t have played against the Hornets

Well, you talk about blaming Thibs

as if there’s a cause-effect relationship between Rose still hurting and playing in the NO game. I think it’s important to note that your entire point rests on guesswork that Rose wouldn’t be in this same position whether he had played or not.

umm...

your entire point rests on guesswork that Rose wouldn’t be in this same position whether he had played or not

It’s more than a guess to surmise that he would be further along in the healing process had he not played – it’s a logical inference.

No one (including the trainers) would be able to say to what degree it delayed the healing process, but it is very difficult to imagine that it didn’t to some degree.

I haven't quite figured out what point you're trying to make, but I'm pretty sure it's dumb (no offense)
Your mom sleeps around

(no offense)

now...

that’s a guess

Ahh yes, "your mom" jokes. The scourge of the 20th century

You sir, have found my weakness. Now excuse me while I go cry in a corner thinking about what other horrible things my mother might be up to at this very moment.

Actually, my joke was about saying "no offense" after something designed to be offensive

Not really surprised you missed that one too.

Delonte West joke in 3... 2... 1...
those only work on yfbb
This doesn't sound too good:
Neil Hayes @bynhayes
Derrick Rose on back: "I’m still getting treatment on it all day everyday and praying about it and just trying to stay positive. " #Bulls
jesus,

and you know the back problem was from him compensating for the goddamn toe. i said it then and i’ll say it again, he needs to sit and for a while.

true, but to be fair

he could tweet “riding a streak of blowouts and coming off some rest, ready to destroy the Celtics!!! #fuckrondo” and you’d still be panicking about something

Just a heads up, something funky going on with this sentence (obv not used to writing on the weekend)
The Bobcats meanwhile are terrible, and injuries hurt them even more than the Bulls because they don’t have they replace average players with awful ones
wow, no kidding.

I’ll fix it.

and what the hell is wrong with tyrus

i have bigger arms than him for god’s sake.

hmmm...

buying steroids from the same dude who used to sell him dime bags of “primo” oregano?

When people say "What's wrong with Tyrus?", doesn't that kinda presume that he was, at some point, "right"?

He sucked in Chicago, and now he’s sucking in Charlotte, only with a bigger contract. I’d say everything is pretty much status quo in Tyrus Thomas’ universe

just specifically, why is he so thin.
cocaine a hellva drug?
his arms look tiny

maybe after that freak weightlifting injury where he broke his arm, he decided to stop pumping iron?

no, he's way worse now then he was then

so pointing out you had it all along just means you’re gloating you were wrong then. so there.

I'll give you that. Although I wouldn't go as far as to say "way" worse

I still think he was pretty much trash when he played here. It was masked by some highlights, and the fact that he could get to the line a little bit, but he really never had any clue how to actually play basketball (and obv still doesn’t)

No he's way worse now

In ‘09-’10, he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per 36 minutes. This year, he’s averaging 9 points and 7 rebounds per 36 minutes. I always thought that Tyrus was a worse player than the stats indicated because of his poor basketball IQ, but when he was with the Bulls, he at least produced from a statistical standpoint. Now he’s not even doing that.

Players like Tyrus are the reason I hate per minute stats

There’s reasons he wasn’t actually getting those numbers and minutes

Sure

But he’s not getting those minutes now either. The point, is, he’s producing less now than he was with the Bulls. That’s pretty indisputable.

Correct

Tyrus was never as good as his blocks/steal made him look in various metrics, but he’s undoubtedly worse than he even was a few years ago. I do think it was predictable by the time the Bulls traded him that he wasn’t going to see major improvement, but this was hard to predict.

I can't believe we traded Aldridge for Thomas

That trade of Tyrus for Aldridge and Khabibibwhatevernooneremembersorcares has to be the low point for the org’s drafting over the past 6-7 years. Of course, if it weren’t for that trade the Bulls might not have had the 1.7%, and Derrick Rose is far more important than Aldridge will ever be. Still, it is quite tempting to imagine how awesome the Bulls would be if they had Aldridge instead of Boozer.

Yeah, Rose is the only reason they weren't sunk by that decision

Other than Tyrus, they haven’t made any undebatable mistakes. Guys like Sefolosha and James Johnson didn’t work out, but they retained enough value to be traded for other useful pieces.

Yeah, still have no faith Aldridge develops into a stud under the genius coaching abilities of Skiles and Vinny.
that noah video is hilarious

As far as thibs…I like his vague attitude…I wanna say doc rivers and phil does the same thing

Almost every coach does this

It’s been hell in fantasy basketball because of it. Some players have been day-to-day for weeks, when the coach clearly knew they weren’t close to playing.

Day to Day

I do wish that the organization would, in other than truly crucial games, follow this simple formula for their important players:

DTD = DNP

Derrick plays the most punishing style of game there is in this league

He drives to the basket in a way that is almost reckless. It’s just too much for a season like this. I don’t even know how one would go about telling him to cool it either; that’s just how he plays. I wish Thibs would just tell him to head back to Chicago and be ready to play Tuesday, but that isn’t going to happen.

Also, I saw someone on some other blog (Thankfully, no one here is that stupid) make the point that the Bulls are 5-1 without Rose and that shows that they don’t need him and that “…the team is what makes a team good, not the best player.”

To that, I say…really? The Bulls have played the Bobcats twice, the Wizards, the Suns, the Kings, and the Griz with Rose out. Not exactly murder’s row there.

Bulls will roll over the C’s Sunday, Noah will make KG his bitch, and everything except Rose being healthy will be right in Bulls’ land.

Yeah, that along with how great an athlete he is is what makes him unstoppable for the most part when a couple of picks are set for him and he goes to the rim and can get a close shot every time and he even avoids some big hits by how quick he is, but he still gets knocked around plenty, goes with it.

First time in years

But I did notice last night while watching the game that Bulls basketball for a stretch has been not fully exciting.
Not so long ago was a team that any game was never a ‘given’ for a win.
Now you can look ahead at the schedule and check off games knowing which ones will be tough and the others that will be exciting, and potential trap games.

The so-called Baby-Bulls years (how long did that last?) had blow-outs here and there, but no game really was predictable.

But I won’t complain! Like seeing some one-sidedness.

ha, i said yesterday i know it sounds spoiled, but i'm getting tired of these ass kickings.
yeah even last year we blew some really dumb games, but we've only lost to playoff teams (and nemesis GS)
I can just imagine a Bobcats fan reading your post

calmly shutting down the computer, putting on his hat, grabbing his shotgun on the way out the door, and then driving to Chicago looking for you.

Enjoy these blow outs while they last, it shows how dominate we are.

A few years from now we won’t be this suffocating on defense that most of us will be saying “man remember when we blew teams out no problem?”

Why won't they have a suffocating defense in a few years?
It's really on Rose to be truthful about how he's feeling. Even if Rose is at 50%, he'll tell

the staff and coach Thibs he’s good to go. He has to be smarter about how he handles these injuries. If he just sat out for a good week, and let his team play I think they’ll be fine. But he’s a competitor and he’ll try to play through injuries, which might be a detriment to the team in the long run. Hopefully he wises up and just sits for a week. He can’t heal properly if he keeps trying to come back from injuries too soon.

I just want to say

Bring back Acie Law!

He’s like 100 times better than Lucas

#couldvehadlin
also mike james would have been better too imo
I like mike james better than lucas

he shows more poise. Lucas reminds me of an upgraded pargo.

man I'm better than Lucas

taller at least

I'm shorter than Lucas

And slower than Kurt Thomas.

That doesn’t change the fact that Acie was the answer for us all.

I liked Acie Law. I think he's languishing in Europe somewhere now.
This is really kind of a shame

I think he deserves a roster spot somewhere.

the regular season is getting boring after all these blowouts

this lin thing is so much more exciting right now.

the season games just seem meaningless right now with all the injuries and blowouts,
only games im looking forward to now are against the pacers knicks heat and thunder.

just cant wait till the playoffs. just hope we get to the finish line with everyone healthy and then the real season begins.

I said it last night, and I'll say it again.

That was just about the most Thibsey blowout you’ll ever see.

And, I might as well bring out a SCH tradition for blowouts...

David Lee Roth

Does anyone else wonder

if coaches are influenced by the organizations in general to list players as game time decisions rather than say that they are not playing in advance? I imagine that ticket sales at the Bobcats game or others in arenas that don’t typically sell out would see some sort of impact if people knew Derrick was or wasn’t playing in advance.

im pretty sure most people bought their tickets at the beginning of the season to see teams like the bulls heat thunder etc
I agree

But I’m referring to games that would not be sold out in advance and are in much desperate need of ticket sales. I would think the Bobcats organization and the NBA in general would actually rather not know if Derrick Rose is actually out if it makes them more money through increased ticket sales.

I really hope that's not true

I don’t want any more reasons to dislike those guys.

To put a positive spin on the Rose injuries

There’s always going to be some nagging injuries that you just have to play through. Maybe this season Rose will learn which injuries and pains he can play through and which one’s he can’t. And with the injuries/pains he can play through, he can also learn how to play effectively through them.

He can rest till the playoffs, but will he be 100% even then? If not, it would be a waste if he didn’t have a chance to learn to play through the injuries during the season so that he would be prepared to handle them effectively in the playoffs.
