Derrick Rose is "telling people he plans to play on Monday" when the Bulls host the Nets at the United Center, K.C. Johnson reported, adding:
As for Rose, he told teammates on Friday in Cleveland he planned to play and didn't. So the morning shootaround could determine if he can play on his sprained big left toe.
In the four games missed by Rose last week, C.J. Watson, John Lucas III, and Mike James combined for 95 points, 40 assists, and 15 turnovers (23.8, 10, and 3.8 per game), shooting a .544 eFG%, according to Basketball-Reference.com. Watson's led the way with three starts, 31.0 MPG, 16.5 PPG, 6.0 APG, shooting a .598 eFG%, averaging 10.3 shots per game and nailing 81% of his 21 trips to the line.

Rose has missed five of the last seven games, is admitting he likely shouldn't have played in the two games he did, and says the injury's lingered since first sustaining it in the 2010 playoffs:
Rose said he has been dealing with the injury in his left big toe off and on since his second season in the league, in 2010, when he believes he injured it during the Bulls' playoff series against the Cavaliers.
"I wasn't able to bend my toe in like three years so when [the injury] happened, it bent it and it aggravated it ... I forgot when I played on it again," Rose said. "I played on it sooner than when I was supposed to play on it and it was real bad."
Rose admitted that he has to be a little more careful with the injury.
"Yeah, knowing that right when it starts feeling good, it could go right back to zero," Rose said. "I definitely want to be out there playing, but I got to make the smartest decision."
After Rose, Lucas (groin), Joakim Noah (ankle), Taj Gibson (high ankle sprain) all sat out Saturday's win over the Bobcats, it was announced that Luol Deng sprained his wrist in the game. K.C. reported Deng may not be able to suit up Monday, making it more difficult for the Bulls to simply have a team to put on the court. The "line between tough, stupid, and necessary" are becoming further blurred.
To add a sixth big man on the roster so the rotation isn't limited to Carlos Boozer, Omer Asik, and Brian Scalabrine, the Bulls would have to either sign a big to a ten-day contract or pay the luxury tax, K.C. added, making an addition "unlikely at this point". Sorry, Leon Powe fans.

me no likey
its not as common in basketball, but turf toe ends careers. this, plus Rose admitting last year he’s already lost 3 inches on his vertical… I just hope his athleticism isn’t in line for a rapid decline.
BULLieving in Miami - January 23, 2012 via mobile
well, it doesn't mean he won't get that athleticism back.
if he can let the damn toe heal. there is zero point to him playing the nets.

Lu is out tonight. Somewhere Thibs is crying and eating a gallon of ice cream.

Look on the bright side.
Thibs may make Butler wear Deng’s jersey and play him 48 minutes tonight.

THEKILLERWHALE - January 23, 2012
What I don't get is if Rose's injury was that bad after the cleveland series, why didn't
the medical staff advise him to rest for 3 straight weeks to let it heal completely. Or are we still not sure if it’s actually turf toe, or more of a minor sprain? I wish he would just rest until it’s completely healed. Even if he feels no discomfort, it doesn’t mean it’s completely healed. He can end up re-aggravating it.
BlackStar - January 23, 2012
My guess is that there just isn't a clear diagnosis.
With that seeming to be the case…siding on the side of caution with your franchise player would seem to be the safe bet.
bleigh82 - January 23, 2012
We need to hire the Phoenix Suns medical staff
I mean, they kept Shaq healthy for a whole season??
coke - January 23, 2012
I'm not sure about this
On the one hand, it seems like Rose understands the caution he needs to take. On the other hand, it seems like he just wants to play. That said, if the injury has been nagging since early in his career, he may simply have to learn to play with it. I’m not a doctor, but I know for sure that the Bulls could lose plenty of games and still be in good shape going into the playoffs. Heck, at least don’t bother coming back until the top seed is in real jeopardy. Indy and Orlando are still 2.5 games back. Until they are tied for the top seed, why would Rose even bother coming back?

this doesn't look to be a 'burnout' type injury, but
Deng exited Saturday’s game to get the wrist taped, and Thibs put him back in with 2:42 left and the Bulls up 9.
post-game Thibs said ‘Deng said he was fine’. I mean, I get it, but at some point there’s coaches discretion in these things. The Bobcats need entire quarters to score 9 points.
your friendly BullsBlogger - January 23, 2012
...and you would think he got that from working with the kg/pierce/allen
Belize - January 23, 2012
Deng left with a 15 point lead at 5:24
The Bobcats then scored 6 straight points, and Thibs brought him back with a 9 point lead at 2:42. It’s highly unlikely they could have come back, but things were moving in the wrong direction.

inkybreath - January 23, 2012

piccolomair - January 23, 2012
Well, we certainly may see what we have in Jimmy Butler
This compacted season is ridiculous. While it is not the source of most of the Bulls injuries (Deng’s was on a normal play, Derrick’s on diving for a loose ball, Noah came down on someone’s foot etc), what really sucks is how many games you miss! You could miss a month in a normal season and miss 4 or 5 less games! That said, the Bulls are at the best possible point of their schedule to pile up injuries. Come middle of February, things are going to get tough. If the Bulls have some semblance of health by then and can carry that into the playoffs, they should be fine.
OT: Heat just lost to Milwaukee last night and Bulls still have a 2.5 game lead on the top spot in the East. Despite all the shitty news, Bulls still sitting pretty and playing great.
DRoseO1 - January 23, 2012
yeah i mean these injuries came at the "best" possible time
we’ve played shit opponents for a few weeks now. starting with the mia game it’ll be a bit tougher – 9 game trip (after we’ve already played the most road games in the league!! JFC), but then we have 2 major homestands (one before the all star break, one after), and only one back to back before the all star break.
Jaina - January 23, 2012

majority of dengs injuries have been freek injuries…esp this one
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
all injuries are freak injuries
sin - January 23, 2012
wrong...
there are two kind of injuries: chronic and acute. The injuries kobe went thru before his knee surgery: chronic due to multiple knee injuries. The injuries that pippen got, shaq got, oden is getting etc. THOSE ARE CHRONIC INJURIES. They occur due to age or b/c of other variables (e.g. roy “degenerating” knees).
Injuries like deng that occurs one every two years/three years or any new injuries that come up (this new RIGHT wriswt injury) and “freek” injuries.

Tim S. - January 23, 2012
If this Deng injury really does turn out to be serious, GarPax may need to explore a trade, no?
Paul Pierce, Gerald Henderson, Omri Casspi, Tayshaun, Grant Hill and Josh Howard are all good two way options at SF. None are as good as Lt. Deng, but if this injury is season-ending, what do they do?
Would the Bulls just slide Brewer in at 3 and go Rose/Rip/Brew/Booz/Jo? They don’t lose much on D but Rose and Booz would have to pick up the offense without the Sudanese Breeze.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
id go for pierce
sin - January 23, 2012
Pierce is good, but you'd have to be willing to take on 2 more years of contract after this one.
He’s due 16.8 million next year and 15.3 the year after. Also, I don’t know how you can possibly make that deal work; the Bulls would have to trade some significant players to make the money work.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
you take him this year

Prevenge - January 25, 2012
Sin, read my comment again.
He’s signed for two more years after this one. He wouldn’t be an expiring deal until two season from now.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
final season is $4-5m guaranteed
per Sham.
your friendly BullsBlogger - January 23, 2012
Ah, I was getting my info from hoopshype.
But that’s still a decent amount of cash. If Deng is out for a while and GarPax do go out and try to fix a deal, I’d say go all in on Gerald Henderson. I’ve really liked him for a couple of years now, and he can slide in for Lu the rest of this season and then take over at the 2 whenever Rip is done here. He’s a little undersized (6"5) at the 3 but he’s my favorite of most of the options out there. If they can pull it off, a Rose-Henderson backcourt is one that could be here for the next decade.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
Also, in order to make the contracts match, you're gonna have to send a lot back (like Brewer + Korver at least), which would kill our depth.

I’d rather listen to the guy who says he has no sources. At least I don’t have to weigh everything he says, considering whether it’s pure opinion or leaked information.
runningman - January 23, 2012
What in the hell is that about?
Has there even been the slightest hint that it could be THAT serious?
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
Man this board is tweaking today.
gotta head out for awhile sheesh.
Sandberg's evil twin - January 23, 2012
Lol yep
Gettin a little alarmist in here
mexkrn - January 23, 2012
at the very least, rose should take the night off...
his toe can heal properly, but hes being reckless.
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
He sounds discouraged
Like he knows that this is something that can pop up again no mater what. The thing is, if he tries to compensate for the pain in that toe, he could very easily injure something else. Especially when Thibs is playing him 40 minutes a game
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
I would just completely concede on seeding right now
Fuck it all. Get everyone completely healthy.
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
My guess is that all the gloom is because Deng will miss the All Star Game
which indeed is pretty shitty
JustAnotherFan - January 23, 2012
yeah, hope that's all it is. Just a month or something
We can go a month without him
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
it will very shitty for Deng tho
hopefully it makes him even more hungry for the championship – if that’s even possible
JustAnotherFan - January 23, 2012
the man i s as hungry as any damn superstar in the league
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
that was completely uncalled-for!
he’s from africa. we get it!
LeBryaneWosh - January 23, 2012
could also mean that he's out long enough to hurt his chances of getting the coach's vote
not even necessarily being out till the actual game…
man… wish we’d hear some news.
Jaina - January 23, 2012
I think if he's hurt for anything more than a week, that all but kills his chances as an All Star
He was borderline to begin with, and if he’s out for a while? No chance
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
read below
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
tbh, as selfish as it sounds...i would prefer no one plays in the all star game from the bulls
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
Too Deng it would be very special, imo
I’d like to watch him in Orlando
JustAnotherFan - January 23, 2012
lol
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
oops, meant to bold the fact that Bulls doctor Brian Cole was gonna be one of the guests on the pre game show
Which says a lot
Juiceboxjerry - January 23, 2012
He's the most important man on the Bulls right now
runningman - January 23, 2012
hey now we know who to tweet to bench Rose
JustAnotherFan - January 23, 2012
Stupid HeatSPN
If it Norris Cole were injured we would have details by now.
tuff-gong - January 23, 2012
there would be a team in the hospital
JustAnotherFan - January 23, 2012
The Heat index would be bedside.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
Weren't they giving minute-by-minute body temperature reports of LeBron's fever?
JustAnotherFan - January 23, 2012
lebron's suppository ...now showing on ESPN3
Belize - January 23, 2012
lmfao
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
Well, I doubt they used a suppository because then Bosh
would have to take his……….
That was too easy.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
I'm blaming BAB
You bastards wanted Deng to rest soo much, now he got his rest.
:tears:
Slick Ric - January 23, 2012
OT: i know this is a stupid question, but when the hell are they gonna have an all star game in chicago?!!
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
Probably not for awhile
They did it 20 years or so ago. But it seems like they like giving them to cities that build new stadiums or are good vacation destinations.
Niwrad - January 23, 2012
oh well, at least we had the mlb all star game in Chicago 2004
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
When Dwight puts Chicago on his list
In other words, when global warming causes a temperature shift. They overwhelmingly prefer to have these things in warm cities.
runningman - January 23, 2012
yeah, hence why i said stupid question, but it ticks me off chicago never get the big all star games
or SB for some time (baseball being the exception)
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
probably never
the team (reinsdorf?) stance is that they want the season ticketholders to be able to go or something…
Jaina - January 23, 2012
this deng news is like a punch in the stomach
we won’t have a shot without him (if he misses the playoffs) and it’s making me sick.
shutupdrogba - January 23, 2012
Could just be saving him for our division foes on Wednesday
KCinIL - January 23, 2012
kept saying it
and thank you to KC Johnson for not asking it, but it’s not a question of total minutes in a season. It’s about the frequency of minutes as well, and there has never been a season of this density. Constant playing of your best players a la last season doesn’t work this year. Thibs, for all his tremendous gifts, needs to see the pressing need for rotation and adjust. Subbing in Luol with 2 minutes left and Bulls up nine doesn’t reflect this.
And if you told me at the beginning of the season that nearly half the Bulls’ roster would be injured simultaneously, I’d ask first about Boozer. But G-d bless him, he’s the only thing preventing a season collapse for the next 2 weeks.
holla8283 - January 23, 2012
Minutes, whether it be frequency or number,
has got nothing to do with luol’s injury. You don’t screw up your wrists because you played too many minutes. It might wear down your knees and ankles, but your wrists will be fine.
dakoose - January 23, 2012
Does anyone know how often Bulls.com updates their injury report?
I usually steer clear of “official websites” but I noticed that Deng is still listed as a gametime decision. Does that mean anything?
tuff-gong - January 23, 2012
hasnt been updated for some time
well find out bout his status in bout 1 hour.
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
hmm?
shutupdrogba - January 23, 2012
hmmm...well, thats normal for a wrist sprain with moderate ligament damage
im getting more optimistic!
Geo4MVP - January 23, 2012
